OUR STORY

Cancer changes many things, but for my dear friend Julie, one of the first fears she voiced after her breast cancer diagnosis was, “I’m going to lose my hair.”
She was devastated…not just by the illness, but by the thought that she would no longer look or feel like herself. She felt exposed, vulnerable, and unable to hide the fact that she was sick.

On Julie’s first day of chemotherapy, a social worker told her about the Cancer Hair Foundation. From her very first consultation with Savannah, she felt an overwhelming sense of comfort, as if she was finally in the hands of people who truly understood. My heart melted when she told me, “I feel like I’m going to be taken care of.”

By the time she met them, Julie had already shaved her head. All they had to work from were the photos she brought in. When she returned to pick up her new hair, I’ll never forget her reaction. It looked so much like her that it took her breath away. Tears filled her eyes as she told me, “They gave me my confidence back. I feel normal again.”

That love, compassion, and genuine care stayed with her until the very end. Sadly, on November 2, 2016, Julie lost her battle with breast cancer. But her strength, her gratitude, and her story inspired me to create the Cancer Hair Foundation, so that others facing the same fears can find hope, dignity, and a piece of themselves again.

THE REALITY OF BREAST CANCER

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women worldwide, affecting millions each year. In the United States alone, 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer during their lifetime. More than 1 in 3 women with early breast cancer face the risk of recurrence, depending on diagnosis and risk factors. While survival rates have improved with early detection and treatment, the physical and emotional challenges can be life-altering. Behind every statistic is a woman, a family, and a story worth fighting for. And, together, we can bring them hope, strength, and support.
